Greetings All
During the last weekend, I found myself often in the vicinity of dove-hunters. Not only were they polite, a fair number were outright friendly and interested in what I was up to. I do think dressing like an outdoorsman (I wear camo) helps in this, but even before I did so, I found treating hunters with respect usually earned the same in return, and over the years I've actually learned a fair bit from them. Most are avid naturalists. Yes there are some yahoos, just like in birding, but they are in the distinct minority.
Do I find the noise bothersome. Of course. And I am sure they find me traipsing across their intended path of fire bothersome as well. I understand people wanting peace and quiet going elsewhere. What we need are more natural areas, and a mandatory birding stamp would help provide just that.
Do note that the main noise issues (activity) with dove hunting seems to be opening week and the week that follows.
Finally, you'd have to run into Dick Cheney to get hurt by dove-shot, ie take a shot at point blank range. Any hunter is going to know you are in the vicinity long before you get that close (unless your the birding Ninja). Being around deer or elk hunters is where the danger truly lies.
