The Harris’s Hawk first found by Norma Verhoeff was still present along US50 about 11 miles w of Lamar. The exact location was US50 jct Bent CR33. It was atop a wooden telephone pole on the south side. All sightings I am aware of have been between CR33 on the east and CR 32 a mile to the west, with the bird either sitting atop short or tall poles, or cavorting in flight with harriers. US50 milepost 423 is in the heart of the Harris’s Hawk activity area.
The Black-legged Kittiwake first reported by Glenn Walbek a few days ago was still present at Long Lake on Kiowa CR 19 between Blue Lake and Haswell. Also at Long Lake were two White-fronted Geese, two Black-bellied Plovers, two Bonaparte’s Gulls, at least one Greater Scaup, lots of white and white-cheeked geese, Sandhill Cranes, flyover longspurs, total of 34 species. Locals say this playa rarely has water but when it does, it somehow has fish, and then lots of birds.
