Hybrid? Male Flicker in west Centennial, Arapahoe County

Hello Fellow Birders,

 

   Male flicker on the suet in my little townhouse yard 1/4 mile northwest of the intersection of Holly & Arapahoe, is an apparent blend of Yellow- & Red-shafted subspecies.  Has a red (though faint) nuchal on nape like Yellow-shafted, deep orange undertail more like Red-shafted, and half-and-half red & black malar marks like a little bit of each!

Hey Kevin -- 

I believe these integrades are becoming more common here on the edge of the eastern Colorado Plains, an east-west mixing zone for the red-shafted and yellow-shafted varieties.

We've had a small number most years in Denver City Park, for instance, over the past six years or so.

But that half-and-half , black-and-red malar you describe is definitely a new variation, to me anyway. Very cool.

The most interesting one I've seen up to now was several years ago, I think also in City Park.

That intergrade flicker's tail underfeathers were split right down the middle in contrasting shades of yellow on one side, red on the other.

Flickers of any coloration are just plain cool.
