Apologies, but upon further review . . . the photos show this to be not the male yellow-bellied sapsucker seen in exactly the same place on April 1 (in fact, the same tree at one point), but rather a red-naped sapsucker.

The double row of vertical white lines on the back is distinctive (vs. extensive barring), as is the red nape, which is not heavy but is clearly visible. Throat and chin are entirely red, indicating probable male (though Sibley's says some females have red chin instead of white).

Bonus: according to eBird, it's a first-ever sighting in Denver City Park.
