Possible American Redstart at Lowell Ponds

Yesterday midday at Lowell Ponds, Merlin Sound repeatedly ID’d an American Redstart. I couldn’t spot it, although there were a pair of Bullock’s Orioles and lots of Red-Winged Blackbirds in the area. Mentioning here because eBird/Merlin tagged it as rare. I did not include it in my checklist as it would have been a lifer for me and I could not confirm its presence with knowledge or a visual.

While banding at Chatfield this spring we played with Merlin quite a bit since we had to stay out in the net lanes monitoring for a misbehaving Bobcat.  Merlin often mistook Yellow Warbler for Redstart.  It did get the Redstarts correct when they called.   There are several Yellow Warblers at Lowell Ponds.  Just a thought.

I agree, I did see a couple of American Redstarts this spring on migration but I saw Merlin repeatedly identify AMRE when a yellow warbler was singing. I did see and hear a yellow warbler and saw Merlin call it a redstart, so another example of how Merlin can be a great tool for learning, identifying and locating birds but it should not be used as a definitive identificación. Many times our ears can hear much more than Merlin.  Merlin is definitely improving, but not for 100% identity without our own judgement.

Great information -- thank you all for the insight! Indeed, that's why I never trust a new-to-me bird on Merlin alone. And I was on the observation deck, right beneath the trees where I've seen yellow warblers the month or two (and saw at least 3 yesterday).
