Bushtit swarm, Louisville

This morning I looked out my back window, which faces north towards a large (~40’) juniper tree that I planted ~20 years ago. It was loaded with tiny blue berries and it was swarming with Bushtits eating(?) the berries.  I estimate that the flock numbered at least 20 birds, making it the largest single flock of Bushtits that I’ve seen on my property!  The tiny birds were moving so fast in and out of the tree that I didn’t actually see a berry being eaten, but they were in the tree for at least 5 minutes, suggesting that they were after the berries.

I went into my front yard where some of the Bushtits had flown to investigate Washington Hawthorne berries (they didn’t seem interested).

Amazingly, they were quiet.  

It was quite a sight — unfortunately, I didn’t get any pictures because I am temporarily without the use of my left arm due to a shoulder replacement a few weeks ago.

We were swarmed by a darling group of bushtits this morning, too! At least 20, but probably more. They were flying and flitting between my junipers, suet feeder, burning bush and blue spruce. And then, just like that, they were gone. They are the cutest!
