We were hiking above Trappers Lake and came across these 4 waterfowl.  Thoughts on what they are?  First thought was a Ruddy in summer but they did not have the Ruddy beak or tail and these have a shoulder white streak and white patch on the rump.

They look like duckling goldeneyes. Barrow's Goldeneye nests there at Trapper's.

Really! - Noting that the range maps can be 'off' - even Sibleys suggests that Barrow's is 'rarely' found here; certainly not 'nesting'.  The image of a Common Goldeneye duckling in Sibley's looks just like the photo - but they 'apparently' don't nest here either!  Fortunately, birds don't read the range maps

And there were no adults around? Would they have left them.

Interesting indeed

Breeding records for Barrow’s Goldeneye are scarce in Colorado, but do exist. There were a few observations during both the first and second Colorado Breeding Bird Atlas field periods, all in northwestern Colorado, at least one of them in the Flat Tops Wilderness Area.
