CObirders,
I don't recall the year, but this one is my favorite (see attached px). I was so excited I could hardly hold the camera. I can't find my total list for my property in Louisville, but as I recall it's only about 140 species.

Megan and others,

My Painted Redstart:

1. My redstart  is RED on its upper breast  not orange as on the Am.Redstart

2.  My redstart has a white wing patch vs. none on the Am.Redstart

I could go on, but it would be easier if birders would look at their bird books, for instance:

See page 382 in “The Warbler Guide”  by Tom Stephenson and Scott White for a comparison of these two redstart species.

Please, when questioning an identification please do not be rude or snarky as some people have been!

Paula,
Very cool bird. I'm wondering what characteristics you used to ID this as a Painted Redstart and not a male American Redstart.
Thank you,
Megan

Dear CObirders:  I had no idea that I would get a response in regards to my Painted Redstart picture such as that I received from Cole Sage.  I have copied it for everyone to read.

I recommend that Mr. Sage be blocked from CObirds.

This is not a Painted Redstart it is an American Redstart. When identifying birds it is often good to use a field guide and not jump to the rarest possible bird.

Best,

Cole Sage

Sorry, Paula, but I agree with Cole. This is an American Redstart. It does not have the brilliant red belly of the Painted Redstart. Please see this:

Also, IMO, Cole’s response to you seemed no more rude or snarky as yours was to Megan. Please realize that e-mail is lacking as a form of communication. Among other things, one cannot see the writer’s body language or hear the writer’s voice inflection.
