While scouting in the Deer Creek watershed for Saturday's CFO Birding Challenge Big Day, with its Pinyon Jay  conservation focus, Judy McKeon and I were surprised to encounter three Pinyon Jays along Cougar Road near Grizzly Drive. We heard and then saw one perched briefly (or did not remain perched long after we noticed it) and it too-soon moved north with two others in a long flight. It was a bit of a mind-blower, as even though Pinyon Jay has been on my mind for the conservation cause of the CFO Birding Challenge, they are rare and sporadic in the area and Jefferson County has few spring records. Most records from the region in eBird are from the fall season.

We enjoyed a great cross-section of birds this morning. It is not too late to donate or pledge to our Big Day team the "DFO Deer Creekers". Our effort will be confined only to the Deer Creek watershed of JeffCo.
