in the middle of a hole in the ice in the second gravel pond upstream on the Platte river. Indeed, as Joe Roller said, it is a shorter walk from Rampart Range Road where it intersects the Highline Canal.  You can scope it from the canal walkway but to get close (and the bird does not show any signs of alarm at close approach) you have to walk around the big property with the white fence and down the hill to the pond. A magnificent bird!
