Where: Unitarian Universalist Church of Boulder, 5001 Pennsylvania Avenue, off 55th St. between Arapahoe and Baseline.
We will start the evening with a short update presented by Dana Bove, illustrating his group’s research on nesting Bald and Golden Eagles in the Front Range.
Immediately thereafter, Amber Carver will present:
Grazing Regimes and Ground Nesting Birds
Amber Carver has been monitoring and documenting how McCown’s Longspurs, Lark Buntings, Brewer's Sparrows, Horned Larks as well as other grassland ground nesters, and how they respond to different grazing regimes on the shortgrass prairie in Northeastern Colorado. There has been an estimated 40% decline in the density of prairie birds over the last 40 years. Some of this precipitous and unsustainable decrease is attributed to cattle grazing. Amber's ambitious project is teasing out where the problems might lie and how to address them.
Amber has a background in field ornithology, and her interests include research, conservation, and science communication. Currently in the PhD program at University of Colorado Denver, Amber obtained a BS/BA from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington and a Master’s at UCD. Amber’s goal is to become a research wildlife biologist and professor, working to improve our understanding of avian biology and to increase scientific literacy.
