All,

In my experience, the number of Buff-breasted Sandpipers seen over the last few weeks in Colorado is really exceptional.  Yesterday, there were 6 at Jumbo Res (highest number at one location I've ever heard of), one at Timnath Res and one at Lagerman Res.  On Sunday, 2 were reported from Prewitt Res.  Earlier at the end of August, there were birds seen at Jackson Res and in the southeast in Baca County.  Altogether, I think there have been up to 20 seen in the state, whereas I think the usual number is in the 3-5 range.  Most of the photos I've looked at are of juveniles, so it looks to have been a productive breeding season for this species.

Cheers,  Peter Gent.

I was curious, and while adding up the number of actual birds is a bit tedious, eBird does give a useful measure of annual Buff-breasted abundance with the graph showing high counts for the species. Looking at all of CO, I list below the weekly high counts in eBird for the years 2015 - 2022. Only one week had a double digit high count (15 in 2016) and all other weeks had high counts of 4 or less, and mostly 1-2 birds. But so far this year September had a week exceeding that with a high of 5 this week.
I've pasted the summary below. Again it is weekly high counts listed, not the number of different records or individuals.
