This morning I found another apparent pair of Black Phoebes, these were on private property near Canon City. While I watched one of the birds pulled some plant material off what looked like a dried reed and flew with it to a probable nesting location that was used last year and likely the year before by Black Phoebes.
I also stopped at the MacKenzie Ave bridge over the Arkansas River, a location I posted here last week as having a pair of Black Phoebes. I observe one bird today and could hear calls from a second bird, possibly it was on a nest. This is a good location to observe Black Phoebes from a reasonable distance, sometimes as close as 40 or so feet. Just do be careful if you stand on the east side of the bridge which has no protected walkway (the west side does have a curb between vehicles and the walkway).
