does anyone have any ideas on why an osprey would be hanging out at his/her nest this time of year?

Having been involved in the Osprey introduction program innFort Collins two decades ago, I learned that the nadultm birds begin the migration south first, then followed by their young.  Suspect the individual thatnyounare observing is one of the young-of-the-year that hasn't quite realized (through instinct) thatit is time to get out of Dodge.

Brenda,

I don’t know where you’re located (it would be helpful to know that), but i saw a couple of young in Aspen a few days ago.

Migration departure times are loaded with generalities and variation. Over the last decade single birds of HY and AHY age classes of Osprey have been seen along the Front Range well into October. eBird is a great search tool that can show just how widespread Osprey currently are.
