I never refound the adult male Yellow-bellied Sapsucker I reported on Nov 4. Williamson's Sapsuckers continued in Canon City with a high of 6 birds earier this week. Since Thursday (the second day of below freezing temps here) I did not refind any sapsuckers until yesterday when I saw 1 male Williamson's, an imm Yellow-bellied and an adult male Red-naped. I suspect that the unusually early and long below freezing temps (for 3 days) made feeding a challenge for sapsuckers as the bark (and possibly some of the internal parts) of the trees that drill into would likely be frozen. It is still a challenge for them as I have seen the Williamson's feeding on a deciduous tree and low to the ground where the sun was on that part of the and the Yellow-bellied feeding very low on a pine in a portion where they sun was hitting it. I have uploaded photos of the Yellow-bellied and the Red-naped Sapsuckers on my Birds and Nature blog.
