A friend of mine sent me this photo from Arvada, Jefferson County, wondering what the bird was.  I gave her my opinion but would like all you experts to weigh in as well.  Unexpected bird on a porch railing in Arvada!  Mary Kay Waddington

Overall plumage pattern indicates one of the Myiarchus species of Flycatcher.  Small bill, pale yellow belly, extensive gray chest all point to Ash-throated Flycatcher, a rarity during fall migration in Jefferson County. There are some vagrants that are extremely similar and should also be considered, particularly Nutting’s Flycatcher and Dusky-capped Flycatcher. Vocalizations are unique by species. A recording would be helpful for identification. To rule out Nutting’s, a photo of the underside of the tail would be helpful.
