I thought there might be some interest in this.  I was surprised to see a Franklin's Gull at Marston Reservior on Friday the 4th.  I didn't have my camera, so attempted to take a shot through my scope using my iPhone.  I was actually amazed with the result.

Further to Rick’s email,

For those CoBirders who don’t yet know about how easy it is to “phone-scope” ..

There are actually great adaptors out there, many specifically for iPhones : basically a replacement case with a screw on  ring that will slip over your scope eyepiece – which are very easy to use.

EG: Google  “ iPhone digiscoping adaptor “ and look for one specific to your scope eyepiece – bearing in mind that there is some crossover – eg I tried a Kowa one that fitted my Swarovski perfectly

Phone digiscoping is a great way to document unusual birds.. and help with any subsequent id discussion

Best rgds

Here's a whole article on how to do it:

Author is Sharon Stiteler. Article appears in the ABA's quarterly magazine, "Birder's Guide."

P.s. Turkey Vultures aplenty yesterday afternoon in Gregory Canyon, Boulder County, and a few Vesper Sparrows yesterday (with an Eastern Bluebird, which I posted earlier) at the Coalton Trail, Boulder County. And this morning at Greenlee Preserve, Boulder County, a Black-crowned Night-Heron.

You can also use your iPhone with your binoculars to photo birds if a scope is not available. Hold steady!
