Hi Rachel,

I checked at Lake Hattie this morning and the eiders were still there. However, it was in the single digits last night and calm, so a fair amount of the middle of the lake has started to freeze. It depends on the wind, but with the continued cold weather in the forecast I wouldn't be surprised if Hattie freezes up completely in the next few days. I probably won't go back out there, but I'll let you know if I hear from anyone else who does.

Jonathan Lautenbach, who originally found the eiders yesterday, reports that they are still there this morning. Yesterday we viewed them from the spit in the middle of the lake (41.23842° N, 105.93301° W), this morning Jonathan says that they are more easily visible from the westernmost access point on the south side of the lake at the end of County Road 45 (41.23557° N, 105.94265° W). There’s another public overlook between these two that might be worth checking as well: 41.23619° N, 105.93934° W. All three of these spots seem a bit sketchy access-wise if you’ve never been there before, but they’re all public property.

Are the King Eiders adult males in breeding plumage, in winter plumage or females, or immatures??  Just curious what to look for.

They appear to be females. All brown(ish) with black bills.
