Cobirders,

This Scissor-tailed Flycatcher was a pleasant surprise on my Rush Breeding Bird Survey today. It was 13 miles south of Colorado 94 on County Road 2. Email me if you want precise directions, as Scissor-tails  seem to show good site fidelity. It was just a few miles from a treed lot that featured 3 Cassin’s Kingbirds teaming up with 8 Western Kingbirds to chase me away from at least one of their nests.

Yesterday I had a White-Winged Dove on the Sheridan Lake Survey at Plainview School (Kiowa County, Colorado 96 and County Road 71).

I’ve done these surveys before and never had the quantity and quality of birds as this year. In prior years, only the few farmers who were allowed to have wells were attempting to grow crops along the Sheridan Lake site, given the poor moisture after the nearly 20-year drought.

Southeast Colorado birding benefits along with the farmers!
