Our preliminary count for the Denver Urban CBC Jan. 1, without four of the important areas, stands at 80 species, 23,868 individuals. Two-thirds of them Canada & Cackling Geese.

So far, House Finches outnumber House Sparrows - a new development - 471 to 336. As an urban count, after the geese the most common species: Rock Pigeon, Eur. Starling, & Am. Crow. Because the three South Platte River areas haven't chimed in, we don't have a sense of the duck count (without the river, we have 565 Mallards).

100 raptors of 10 species, plus 43 Bald Eagles (42 counted by Diane Buell going to the roost at Rocky Mtn. Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge). Unusual species include 2 Say's Phoebes found by Mike Serruto's group, as well as the one reported yesterday by Lauren Brook; 9  Snow Geese; one Thayer's & 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, both by Cheryl Teuton & Dan Brooks' group at Cherry Creek State Park.
