This morning, seven of us on a DFO trip enjoyed the companionship and endured the snowy weather and a temperature that started at 29 degrees and ended at 17 degrees, to sample two gravel pits & two yards within 5 miles of downtown Franktown.
At the two gravel pits, we counted 21 species, 248 individual birds. We did not find yesterday's Red-breasted Mergansers, but did find the 5 American White Pelicans from yesterday. Two Double-crested Cormorants, newly arrived, 12 duck species.
At the two feeder yards, we counted 24 species, 196 birds. Most numerous, 66 Dark-eyed Juncos & 40 Wild Turkeys. Otherwise, the expected species from the pines & scrub oak of the Franktown area.
