Subject: Pueblo County Today.

CO birders :

I carried out my first BBS route today ably assisted by Patricia H in Pueblo County ( Doyle Bridge ) east of Pueblo City . Highlights were Eastern Phoebe at the Doyle Road ( CR 321 ) bridge over the Huerfano River and that unlike last year the cholla grasslands were green with up to 20 Cassin's Sparrows recorded compared to just one last year.

Returning via Pueblo Mountain Park at Beulah , we observed a female Acorn Woodpecker feeding young in the dead pine near the Horseshoe Lodge ( same location as last year ) and a singing male Grace's Warbler with a second probable female in the tall ponderosa pines half a mile up the hill from the old tennis/basketball court ( same location as two years ago ) . It tends to sing from the very top of the pines , recognize its song to locate this bird as I think that it will stay for the season.
