Phoebe surprise on DFO Big Month Boulder County highlights

A DFO field trip visited three Boulder County locations today. There was a delightful abundance of returning breeding birds. At Walden/Sawhill PondsThere was a lingering Long-billed Dowitcher and an unexpected late flyby of a single Sandhill Crane. Eastern Kingbirds and Bullock’s Orioles were working out territorial issues. Warbling Vireos, House Wrens, Yellow Warblers, and Yellow-breasted Chats were singing. Canada Geese were escorting goslings.
We next stopped at Boulder Creek and 75th Street. We were pleasantly surprised to see a phoebe fly out from the bridge. A brief search upstream yielded a nice look at the Black Phoebe. At one point we thought the phoebe had flown across Boulder Creek.We thought we had relocated the bird across the creek, but then discovered that one of our party was still looking at the original bird. We now had two Black Phoebes. As we wondered what was the fate of the Eastern Phoebe, seen in the same area earlier in the season, somebody spotted a third phoebe on a fence rail. it proved to be the Eastern Phoebe.
Our third stop was the Interim Joder Trail where Mountain Bluebirds were staking out next boxes and Lark Sparrows were frequent along the trail.
