Hello, Birders.
I'm just back in now from the experience of enjoying a fine night flight over Lafayette, eastern Boulder County, this partly cloudy Thursday morning, Aug. 7th. From 2:30 till about 5:00, many Chipping Sparrows overflew Lafayette. Also a few Yellow Warblers and a decent number of Lark Buntings. Thought I heard a few Brewer's Sparrows; will check the sound spectrograms later for quasi-confirmation (separating Brewer's from Chipping, even spectrographically, is problematic). Twice heard what sure sounded like a Swainson's Thrush, but, given the date, I think not; perhaps instead a Black-headed or Rose-breasted grosbeak, which can sound a lot like thrushes.
I wouldn't be surprised if there are Lark Buntings and Brewer's Sparrows "on the ground" this morning. (And we already know that Chipping Sparrows and Yellow Warblers are dispersing.)
I heard, but didn't get a recording of, a shorebird that I think was a Semipalmated Plover.
A reminder that you too can enjoy the experience of hearing and conjecturing about birds migrating over eastern Boulder County, by way of CFO's field trip next week. Details here:
