I would like some input on this goose at the Montevista wildlife refuge. I thought he was partially leucystic but now have noticed the orange legs. That makes me wonder if he is a white fronted goose cross Canada goose. Snow goose cross Canada goose. Thoughts?

Thanks, Deb Carstensen, Arapahoe County

That looks like Sibley's drawing of a "Graylag Goose x Canada Goose" hybrid,
second edition, page 16.
The head markings, neck and body and orange legs match that drawing, but
the bill is orange in the illustration, so maybe your goose inherited that black bill color
from the Canada Goose side of the family..

Sharp eyes, Deb, to spot that one amongst the other geese!
Thanks.

Thank you, Joe, for telling me exactly where I needed to go in Sibley‘s to find my goose! You mentioned that it doesn’t have an orange beak, that’s true. The other thing is that he’s got a large white patch on his side. The head, however, is exactly like the one I saw! White eye ring, large white patch on cheek, and white around the base of the bill. I think my mystery solved! Thanks, Deb Carstensen

Yes this is a Greylag X Canada Goose Hybrid. It has been around the refuge for 3 years now. Good spot and quite a different bird!
