Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Opening Day, Chatfield Station, 4/25/19

We started our 2019 banding season with a lovely pair of Bushtits.  The female got caught as we approached and the male followed her in; after banding, the lady perched high in a nearby tree and waited for her mate to be released before they flew off together.  Our other captures were a mix of year-round residents, early migrants, and a loaded-with-fat White-crowned Sparrow who may have been around all winter and was taking his time leaving.  Total of 15 new and one SOSP first banded on May 1, 2018:

House Wren 1

Orange-crowned Warbler 1

Wilson's Warbler 1

Song Sparrow 2 new, 1 banded 2018

Lincoln's Sparrow 2

White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 1

We will be open daily, WEATHER PERMITTING, through May 31, except for May 9-11 and 27.  We are opening nets at 6:30, and most days will have birds back at the station by 7:15. We aim to close by noon most days, earlier if it is very hot, very cold, or very windy.  Registration is required for all weekend visitors; see the Denver Audubon website to sign up.  Individuals may visit weekdays without registering before the school groups arrive, which is usually around 10 a.m.
