Habitat along both stretches looks like it will be superb for shore birds in the coming months, but none were there yet. Lower Latham itself is about 70% frozen, but was loaded up with Geese (including Snow and Ross's), Mallards (3000+) and pintail (400 or so), plus an assortment of other ducks. There were quite a few gulls on it too, but heat shimmer was problematic.
The sweet song of Red-winged blackbirds and Western meadowlarks could be heard everywhere.
