A late afternoon jaunt into Weld county revealed two Sandhill Cranes (dancing) and a FOS Lincoln's Sparrow along BB Draw and near Lower Latham along WCR 48 there was a short eared owl as the sun was setting.

Habitat along both stretches looks like it will be superb for shore birds in the coming months, but none were there yet. Lower Latham itself is about 70% frozen, but was loaded up with Geese (including Snow and Ross's), Mallards (3000+) and pintail (400 or so), plus an assortment of other ducks. There were quite a few gulls on it too, but heat shimmer was problematic.

The sweet song of Red-winged blackbirds and Western meadowlarks could be heard everywhere.

Good birding -
