Hi Dave,

I just thought I'd mention that I've gotten combs and what I had thought were yellow jackets inside my covered barbecue many times.  Say's Phoebe's probably don't visit BBQs often, but mine seems to be a favorite location for what I now  suspect is the European Paper Wasp.

Recently Bob Righter posed some interesting questions on COBIRDS about what an individual Say's Phoebe he observed recently in the Denver area might be getting to eat under eaves. Once I got past my amazement that Bob is related by marriage to someone 103 years old, my private response to Bob guessed the answer might include European Paper Wasps (Polistes dominula), an introduced black-and-yellow wasp closely resembling a typical "yellowjacket" that reached CO in the early 2000s. They form small combs under eaves and have become quite common. By contrast, most yellowjacket wasps species nest in the ground, with two nesting in aerial "hives" in trees with the combs being surrounded by an elaborate, round, gray paper mache covering. Unhatched immature European Paper Wasps, dead or alive, in white-capped cells of these combs would seem the most likely source of nutrition for a curious insectivore investigating eaves. Flycatchers are known to favor bees and wasps, in some situations as much or more than flies. My reply to Bob included photos of the wasp and a related situation of a pewee with a yellowjacket in it bill. Bob suggested I post this to COBIRDS. Thinking the photos were a significant part of the response, and since photo sharing on COBIRDS is difficult (why is that?), I didn't take him up on his suggestion. Then he wondered further if perhaps what seems like more wintering Say's Phoebes this year than normal could be directly tied to the increasing presence of European Paper Wasps on our scene. I told him without direct evidence, it was a stretch, but a question worth continuing to investigate.
 
So, I am asking, has anyone out there seen a Say's Phoebe visiting a little wasp comb under an eave? Have you seen any other bird species tearing apart a wasp comb under an eave (flicker, barn swallow, etc.)? Inquiring minds want to know. Assuming, hoping, some meaty anecdotes are out there, this might be the subject of a future "The Hungry Bird" column in "Colorado Birds". Thanks.

I don't have information about birds feasting on wasps under eves (I will
now keep my eyes open for them), but I do have a question about "yellow
jackets" that make the big ball-shaped nests in trees. I've always thought
that the common name for these wasps was "bald-faced hornet". Are they
actually a type of "yellow jacket?" I know common names are misleading and
would be interested in the scientific names, too. (I'm fascinated by paper
wasps and their ability to make such beautiful paper, which I have used in
fiber wall hangings in the past.)

Speaking of Says' phoebes, I have a question about whether or not they would eat box elder bugs. I have had a terrible infestation of Box Elder bugs for the last couple of years and, last spring, I saw hundreds of baby Box Elder bugs running around my garden.
I had Say's phoebes nesting just above my living room picture window this summer and I noticed that I had almost no Box Elder bugs as the summer wore on. I never saw them on the ground eating bugs so I wasn't sure that they would've had anything to do with their absence.
By the way, there couldn't have been any cuter nestlings then the phoebes! Instead of squawking for food, they had soft, whistling calls. They could rent out my drainpipe anytime!

I will be leading a CFO Sagebrush Sparrow/Sage Thrasher trip in Mesa County
in April. Should be some good photo ops - birds will be perched on shrubs
singing. Here are the details:
 
*Sagebrush Sparrow/Sage Thrasher Field Trip*
 
When: April 16 and 17 (two separate trips)
Where: Fruita west to the state line and back to Highline Lake SP
Time: Meet at 8 am at Fruita Rest Stop off I-70. Finish about 2 pm.
1. Listen & observe Sagebush Sparrows and Sage Thrashers singing
on territory.
2. Explore marsh for rails, snipe & marsh wren.
3. Finish at Highline Lake SP Raptors/migrating shorebirds
Bring: *WATER/LUNCH. *Binocs & scope. Dress in layers.
 
Limit group size to 10 participants (3 cars). Folks must be CFO members.

As expected, the deep snow in this area has concentrated the Fountain Creek
Regional Park passerines around the front and back feeders at the visitor
center. The Purple Finch, first found on 14Dec15 by a Boulder County CBC
team, seems less shy and it was visiting the front feeders on a regular
basis this a.m., posing nicely for Loch Kilpatrick and me. The FCRP trails
are all snow covered and the lack of footprints indicate snowshoes or
x-country skis might be the best way to explore beyond the visitor center.

Collins. The warbler is visiting the feeders in the backyard of Luke
Caldwell at 1520 W Mountain. Caldwell welcomes birders to enter his yard
through the front and proceed along the east side. The bird spends most of
the time visitng the feeder in the pine trees along the east fence line
near the alley. On January 15, Forrest Luke reported Yellow-throated
Warbler at 1520 W. Mountain. On January 16, Joe Mammoser reported
Yellow-throated Warbler at the Caldwell residence in Fort Collins. On
January 17, Scott Manwaring reported Yellow-throated Warbler at 1520 W.
Mountain in Fort Collins. On January 21, Dave Leatherman, Norm Lewis and
Nina Routh reported Yellow-throated Warbler at 1520 W. Mountain in Fort
Collins. On January 30, Dave Leatherman reported Yellow-throated Warbler

This is the same area where there was an AMERICAN WOODCOCK last year. This

included 2 photos in her eBird post. On January 17, George James, M Wise,

Bobcat Ridge NA. On January 18, Dave Leatherman reported that the AMERICAN
WOODCOCK was seen by many with the help of Ranger Karl. Leatherman saw it
at Buffam Creek about 150 yards east of entrance to main parking lot. On
January 20, John Vanderpoel and Lisa Edwards reported AMERICAN WOODCOCK at
Bobcat Ridge NA. On January 21, Mark Minner-Lee, Dave Leatherman, Norm

species at Colorado National Monument in an area between the two tunnels
above the West (Fruita) entrance on January 21.

Blue Heron Section on January 22.
--14+ Barrow's Goldeneyes were reported by Leon Thurmon at Blue Heron Lake
in Connected Lakes SP on January 28.
 
MORGAN COUNTY:
--A Laplalnd Longspur was reported by Norm Lewis at Jackson Lake SP on
January 26.
 
PARK COUNTY:
--On January 25, David Suddjian reported all 3 species of Rosy-Finches in
Jefferson at a house with feeders on the South side of garage with name
Schattinger & Sons then later at a house behind Jefferson Market. He also
reported Rosy-Finches in Shawnee, 4 places in Indian Mountain area SE of
Jefferson (all 3 Species), Goshawk road S-SE of Como, and a large flock NW
part of Fairplay. On January 27, Hugh Kingery reported 30 Rosy-Finches
(Gray-crowned and Brown-capped) in Jefferson and about 30 Rosy-Fnches on
Elkhorn Rd. On January 29, Chuck Hundertmark reported all 3 species of
Rosy-Finches at feeders in Jefferson.
 
PITKIN COUNTY:
--All three species of Rosy-Finches were reported by Dick Filby at top of
Sam's Knob at Snowmass on January 21. He will repeat giving a bird talk

--A Curve-billed Thrasher was reported by Steve Mlodinow at CR 84 at CR 77
on January 27.
--3 Lapland Longspurs were reported by Penny Bauer on CR 114 and CR 120
about 1/2 mile W of CR 77 on January 28.
 
YUMA COUNTY:
--On January 26, Connie Kogler reported 3 Northern Cardinals (1f, 2m) and 4
Red- bellied Woodpeckers at South Republican SWA (old Bonny SP). The
Cardinals were in a dense hedge about a mile in on CR 3 and the Woodpeckers
by the campground.
