Birders,

Susan Dietrich contacted me this evening that she had found six Black-bellied Whistling Ducks at La Junta City Park (Otero County). While I was getting ready to go, I got a couple of texts, one saying that they had flown off after being flushed by fishermen, then another telling me they had returned. I got there from my home in Las Animas in about 20 minutes, and was able to photograph them before it got dark.

I don't know when the last report of this species occurred in Colorado, but it was before my time.

Well done, and thanks, Susan.

Well, damn. I really want to see those Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks in Colorado. But for the good of the greater population, I am going to stay at home tomorrow and not chase them. It's frustrating, though.

Good job to Susan for finding them.

Yeah, this one hurts a bit, but you’re right Nathan. Even a small number of cases of severe COVID-19 could cripple healthcare operations in that REGION. Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center apparently has only 92 beds and also acts as a nursing home as well.

The next closest hospitals are about an hour away in any direction with the largest options being in Pueblo. La Junta has 6 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and one death as of the time I’m writing this.

I feel like I’m probably preaching to the choir here, but people should really consider the larger impact that a trip down there could have for themselves, as well as for the smaller rural communities in and around La Junta. To each their own.

If it’s any consolation, Michigan had one of these ducks at a small pond near Ann Arbor from late spring through early Fall last year. While that is not likely to be the case for this small flock, a guy can dream.

I’ll let you guys know if I find anything at Overland Pond Park here in Denver.

All,

There are two previous records of Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks in Colorado.
1 seen by Giff Beaton on 11 July 1991 at a pond north of Briggsdale in the Pawnee.
4 seen by Dugald Owen on 20 June 2015 along the Animas River in north Durango.

Cheers,  Peter Gent.
