Clark's Nutcrackers at 6,000 ft.

The other morning, I thought I heard a Nutcracker noise, and sure enough, today I had 3 hanging around,

Working at Ponderosa Pine cones (until they spotted peanuts being eaten by Steller’s Jays, at which time

They started guarding the platform feeder.)  I’ve seen 3-4 single individuals here over the last 14 years, two of

Which were August 2001 and Sept 2000.

 

Was curious if anyone else is seeing them this low in elevation and wondering if beetle kill in the Lodgepole

pines up in RMNP might be partly the answer?   Or maybe they just wander in the late summer?

 

Still have plenty of 3 species of hummingbirds, although no full plumaged Calliope or Rufous males.   Had a

Black-chinned 2 weeks ago (John Vanderpoel spotted it on a hummingbird workshop trip for Boulder Audubon),

But have not spotted one since.

We also had the Nutcrackers here this week at the lower end of Spring Gulch. They came through last August also.
