Thirteen birders piled into 3 vehicles and birded the Canon City and Pueblo areas to start their 2014 birding.  Nothing really rare was seen, but some nice "year birds" were documented in eBird.

Penrose - large flock of Pinion Jays

Canon City - Lakeside Cemetery - Williamson's Sapsucker - 1 adult male
Canon City - Centennial Park - Red-naped Sapsucker - 1 adult male
Canon City - Rouse Park - Yellow-bellied Sapsucker - 1 adult male
SAPSUCKER SWEEP!   At least a sweep for sapsuckers on the State list (no Red-breasted...yet)

Canon City - Holy Cross Abby - Greater White-fronted Goose - 1 in with Canada and a few Cackling.

Canon City - near Valco Ponds - Say's Phoebe - 1

Pueblo - CF&I Lakes - Snow Goose - 1 (No Swans of any kind were seen...hard to see much of the lakes from the frontage road)

Below the Pueblo Reservoir dam at Valco Ponds:
Greater Scaup - 15
Marsh Wren - 2
Hermit Thrush - 1
Ruby-crowned Kinglet - 6+

Pueblo Reservoir:
Common Loon - 1
Great Black-backed Gull - 1 adult
Lesser Black-backed Gull - 1 adult
Glaucous Gull -  1 adult
Thayer's Gull - 2  1st year
NO California Gulls!  Interesting.
Loggerhead Shrike - 2

Lots of other "more common" species were found throughout the day.

The group's overall total for the day was about 83 species...not to bad...and the year still has 364 days left!
