Sandwich Tern record at Manitou Lake 27 -30 June 2013

CO birders : 

There is an excellent article by David Sibley on Sandwich Tern identification in North American Birds volume 74 number 1 2023 which identifies the Manitou Lake bird as being of the European subspecies Thalasseus sandvincensis.Currently AOU and Clements do not split Sandwich Tern into separate species but other authorities do such as BOU . David's article “European “ Sandwich Tern details in great detail the plumage differences between the American and European subspecies , checked my photos of the Manitou Lake bird and matches nearly all of the criteria for the European .Using these new ID criteria , a number of records of Sandwich Tern in other states are now of the European subspecies. Does the CO Rare Bird Committeee want the Manitou bird records to be resubmitted

I looked at my photos of that Sandwich Tern, Colorado's only state record, and I see the differences between the American and Eurasian subspecies. that Sibley's article shows well.  I agree the Colorado bird would be the Eurasian subspecies, very interesting!  We do get some crazy birds in Colorado.
