FINALLY, Say's Phoebe returned!

So exciting!  Exactly 1 mo late, a SAPH showed up May 1 and began flying up to the nest box SAPH have been using for 3 yrs!  Saw her taking nesting material up there yesterday morning so I got out my old ball of 70% brown angora yarn that I never used for knitting (and provided for last year’s nest).  I sat on the patio and cut 4-5” strips and scattered dozens of them in the grass.  She was watching me and immediately popped down out of the tree and began picking up bunches of them and flying up to the nest!  So, I cut more and scattered them about!  She obviously is building a nest.  But where is the male?  I have only seen one SAPH at a time in my yard or at the pdog fenceline for the past 6 days.  Mystery!

Good luck Kay.  Our patio, as of last Saturday (May 3rd) is now off limits for cooking outdoors.  For the first time, a pair of Say's Phoebe's have decided to nest or at least attempt to nest on our patio.  They have and continue to bring nesting material to build the nest.  It is fun watching them.

Hello everyone;

We also have a Say's Phoebe that has taken up residence at our home.  

The bird started fixing up the Swallows nest that has been used successfully for the past three years.  I didn't want to announce our impending good fortune until I knew how the Swallows were going to accept their nest being usurped.  It seems the swallows have accepted the new tenant and have moved on (for the time being). 

I will be exciting to watch the new neighbors nest.  The swallows always had two broods (around 9-10 fledglings/year) and we will see how successful the Phoebes are in the new situation.
