I wanted to let you know about next week’s screening at Freud Museum/Vienna in case you have friends there. I had interesting responses from the audience in London, one person from Cyprus asking whether the film would be screened in only Northern Cyprus or both Northern and Southern Cyprus. Dear all,

It appears to me that the Republicans are launching the most vicious attack on Black political participation since the end of Reconstruction.  CPAC, Pence and most Congressional Republicans are doubling down on Trump's Big Lie about significant voter fraud in the 2020 election, which is a thinly veiled attack on Black and Latino voter participation and Democratic voter turnout generally.  Republican controlled state legislatures are rolling out more restrictive voting laws.  The conservative dominated Supreme Court appears to be sympathetic to such laws.  If all this is allowed to stand, it will in my opinion be an historic setback for democracy and racial justice.

Fortunately, it seems the Democrats are rising to the occasion; see a story in today's CNN entitled, "House passes sweeping election bill that would counter GOP efforts to restrict voter access:"  https://www.cnn.com/2021/03/03/politics/house-democrats-hr1-vote/index.html  This is going to increase pressure to abolish the filibuster, another vestige of our undemocratic past, because that will probably be the only way the bill can pass the Senate.  There is of course a lot to be said about the psychology and psychohistory of all this, and I don't now where to begin.  Your thoughts?

How can the filibuster be eliminated if the Republican’s only need 40 votes to assure it remains? Ditto  the voting rights bill just passed by the house?

Eliminating the filibuster is not like passing legislation.  It is a senate rule that can be changed by a simple majority vote.  Two Democratic senators in red states--Joe Manchin and Krystin Sinema--have said that they oppose eliminating it, and the Democrats would need all fifty Democratic votes plus Kamala Harris to break the tie.  But with so much at stake, and especially when it becomes apparent that no Republicans will cross party lines to support a new voting rights act, there is going to be enormous pressure on Manchin and Sinema to drop their opposition and agree to eliminate the filibuster. --Brian

Dear all,

Almost every product we use is linked to global economy. Also medical gloves which are so needed in hospitals.

The actual source is one of my colleagues, a brave and courageous Englishman living in Asia. Le Monde Diplomatique was the only media en France which accepted to publish about the issue. Now it is translated in approx. 6 languages.

And in this matter, the US were much more reactive than Europe...
