How do I list recordings by composer?

Clementine appears to be directed toward those who listen to pop music, where you want to list recordings by "artist", which apparently is the default.  What I want to see, since my collection is mostly classical, is a listing of works by "composer" (e.g., Bach - Beethoven, Brahms, etc.).  How can I do this?

With classical music, since the composer is the most important part, the artist is fairly much irrelevant, I have set the composer as the artist.

Now I can listen to a composer/artist of my choosing.

I do the same as Peter, setting Artist and Composer to be the same.  I then put conductor, orchestra and soloists in either the Performer or Comments section.  I also put all music files under the same Composer folder so that I can locate them without too much hassle.

Thanks for your prompt reply, Peter.  But for me, i wonder how I would "set the composer as artist".  Would I have to go through over 11,000 files and
manually enter the composer in the "artist" category?  And if I did, then what would I do with the artist information that is also useful to me (name of soloist(s),
name of orchestra, etc.?

Hi, Jeffery -  It really shouldn't be necessary for those of us who choose to listen to classical to go through such gymnastics.  Why couldn't Clementine
simply offer me a choice of how I want the left hand column listing organized - e.g.,  "List by Composer", "List by Artist", "List by Music Category" ?

The artist is very far from being irrelevant.  When I think about listening to something, I think of the composer first, along with the work, and then
I decide which recording (by which artist(s) I want to listen to.  Say I have 34 recordings of the Bruckner 7th (strange, but true).  I need to be able to see a listing
of artists as soon as I choose a particular work.

You can organize by composer by using advanced grouping of the library
Click the wrench next to the search box>group by>advanced grouping
1st level composer
2nd level artist

I came to clementine recently but have effectively (for me) solved this problem in the following way:

I organize all my mp3 files in directories (one per CD or LP) and tag them with the composer
(id3v2 --TCOM <composer name>). Note that I am linux based. For ethnic music ("World"),
I tag the country or ethnic group with the language tag (id3v3 --TLAN). Other tags are available
to specify the lead performer (TPE1), orchestra(TPE2), and conductor (TPE3). I have written a
small program which can create a m3u playlist file for each group of mp3s (usually an LP or CD),
using the mp3 tags to create the m3u file name. The first word in the m3u file name is the
Composer or Country (or Artist, if neither is specified). These end up alphabetically organized
in a single directory, which is where clementine displays as the music collection in the left hand
panel. Selecting anm3u file loads the listed mp3 files in clementine's playlist.

An interesting solution. However, I'm not sure if it would work for those of us with collections without any .mp3 files,
but with thousands of lossless .flac and .ape files and facing the task of inventing directories in which to place them.
I was most grateful for the suggestion of using the "wrench" tool at the upper left in order to organize by "Advanced Grouping".
There, I chose, in order, "Composer", "Album", "Artist". Works like a charm.

Hm, so everybody missed this option, already existent ?
Why don't you simply right-click on the bar with titles (artist, title, year etc etc) and simply check the option Composer !
That's all that you have to do !

And, provided your files *do* have this tag filled in, you will be able to sort the playlist by composer.
