Hi,
Does anyone add "Preferred Name" when making library cards? If so, is it a prompt in Sierra or just added as a note?
Thank you,
Xochil Arellano

JCPL does. It is a separate/additional field in Sierra which we use to populate automated notices and holds slips, so the patron is addressed as they prefer.

Hi Kristin,
Thanks for the response. So their preferred name will appear on anything Sierra has access to - self checks, holdshelf, databases, mailed communication, etc? Do you have staff explain that the preferred name will appear on all documents for transparency purposes?

DPL's Polaris patron registration also allows us to honor the name a customer actually goes by in addition to capturing the name on their ID (as that is how we would look them up in future if they visit without their card).  The name they go by appears in their My Account, email notices, on hold slips (in masked format) etc.  If the customer wants their legal name used on phone notifications and any mailings (we only mail final bill notices) we can honor that by using a checkbox provided in the patron registration.

Do you have staff explain that the preferred name will appear on all documents for transparency purposes? More or less. We ask if they have a name that's different from what is on their Photo ID that they'd like to us to use.

Our process is the same as JCPL.

Sierra allows us to capture both the patron's preferred name and legal name.  These are listed as 2 separate fields in the patron's account.

We can also search for a patron by using the preferred name or by using the legal name.
