Hi All. Anita asked for any info I might have on this John Grant of Lachine who died there 1817. I decided to Post it here so all can share, or dispute, what I think is true.
I think this John Grant of Lachine is the illegitimate son of Peter Grant [whom I have labelled as "of Isle of Skye"] [others have said he was Black Peter Grant of Craskie-one of the "Good Men of Glenmoriston" but he never married or had any children.]
Anyhow Peter Grant of Isle of Skye apparently fathered several illegitimate kids there, before he married Janet Duldraeggan Grant 1736 1766 [daughter of Aeneas/Angus Grant of Duldraeggan 1702 1779], and there kids would include Alexander Brewer Grant UE [married Sarah Claridge], Peter Grant of Lachine, and Donald Grant of Lachine, who were all half brothers of this John Grant of Lachine d.1817.
John Grant of Lachine d.1817 had a shipping business at Oswegatchie NY prior to Rev War, and relocated the business to Lachine [he was largest shipper of trade goods on St Lawrence and Ottawa Rivers]. Half brothers Peter & Donald Grant of Lachine were NorWester furtraders, Donald would later be an Inn Keeper at Lachine partnered with his half brother John, and Peter built a fine home at St Anne de Bellevue.[which he later sold to his 1st cousin Simon Fraser Jr. the Canadian Explorer.] Cheers J.
