Hydropress volume

Hello,

I'm considering buying a hydropress and I have a question regarding the volume of crushed fruit you can fit into them. 

I am looking at one with a basket/cylinder of 80 L. But in the cylinder, there is of course the rubber bladder that will be filled up with water to press the fruit. So in practice, I expect that significantly less than 80 L can be fit into the basket. 

From what I can see on videos, the bladder in many presses seems to have a diameter of about 20 cm. In a cylinder that is 60 cm tall, that would mean a volume of approx. 19 L. If thaf is correct, roughly 60 L of fruit would fit into the 80 L cylinder. Is that in the right ballpark?

My 40 L presses take about 25 litres in a regular pressing. It's better not to overfill, and even to start with a little "stomach" on the bladder. Thus you get better yield and less mess.

This, I would say, is especially true with larger presses where the distance on average is longer for the juice to travel to the grid.

I produce 10.000 litres a year with 4x40 L and would recommend this size for most users, for better yield and ease of use, unless you know better ofcourse, hehe.

I operate a 40 litre hydro press, I would have to use a different approach when emptying the spent pomace using a larger press due to the weight. I came to the conclusion that I I wanted more output I would be better served by adding a second 40 litre press. As for output I pressed 440 litres of juice on my own the Sunday before last, cleaned up and washed everything off. I didn't time it but the whole process took less than eight hours from start to finish, including setting up.

It sounds a bit counterintuitive that is is optimal with such small presses when you squeeze out a total of 10,000 litres :-)

Anyhow, it's good to know that quite a large volume is used up by the bladder.

I have an 80l hydropress (Lancman). You can get 60kg of milled apples/pears in the press. However, we found that filling the bladder with water, to point of no longer having air, then adding 50kg of pulp gave the best outcomes regarding efficiency of time and yield. Generally, we get 30l per press then move on. Maceration over night helps with yield. When we didn't it would press roughly 25l from 50kg.

Filling a bladder designed for air with water may give good results in the short run but in my experience it is most likely asking for trouble. Expecting a machine designed to to perform under pressure with a medium it was not designed for usually does not end well.

I think the bladder is meant to be fully filled with hence the name “hydro”press. I have one too.

Hi Sandy,

thank you so much for you answer! The Lancman presses, 55L and 80L are the ones I am considering. I wrote to Lancman as well, and they responded that the 80L basket could be filled with approximately 60L of milled apples, which in their estimations should be around 48 kg. So it seems quite aligned with what you write.
