For small-batch cider fermentation, how much air space should small containers (1 gal, 1/2 gaL, or small carboys) have? Once first stage fermentation is complete (ie SpGr ~1.010), how much air space underairlock?

For small containers or really any vessel probably 1-1.5 inches is ideal. As close to the bung without it touching should be your goal. However, if you end up with less I think as long as the airlock is secure and full I wouldn't worry too much. You could also always top up with a bit of cider/juice/water.
