I've long wanted to have a go grafting & would like to combine it with checking out some crab apple varieties I've heard of in cider circles..

Things like hagloe, dolgo.. I'll have to look around for more particular names - happy to hear any suggestions.

But where to source such scions from? I wondered if anyone might have any leads or even be able to sell/send me a few scions of interest?

Thanks, Tom

Found this on the old Welsh Perry & Cider site from a piece by Dave Matthews:
Last February we visited John Kennedy at Perthyre Farm, to see if we could find the Joeby Crab. John is now registered blind, so finding a couple of trees in a five acre orchard just using his memory was, on the one hand, a tad tricky, but on the other hand a tremendous privilege. We were amazed, what with it being February, to find plenty of fruit still on these Joeby Crab trees, so I shook some off with John's walking stick, and took them home. They produced a couple of pints of dark, rich and tasty cider. Next year we'll take some cuttings, and harvest the trees properly to make a lot more Joeby Crab cider! Let's hope that the old trees don't blow over between now and then. It really is a race against time…

A warning about Hagloe Crab - there are two contenders in existence, the true Hagloe and another from Charles Martel which has now been re-named Tupstones. They have distinct DNA profiles.  The true Hagloe looks like the one in Knights Pomona, but Tupstones is quite different.  Be careful what you are buying!

Ah, that's interesting - thanks Andrew.
[found the Knights Pomona via FruitID website you recently linked to for DNA testing, so double thanks!]

Totally amazing rabbit hole - finding some interesting collections & loving reading the details in the various old publications on the Pomonas page of the FruitID site: https://www.fruitid.com/#help

Tom

I have a couple of 1+0 Joeby Crabs in my nursery.  I would have to go and review how much scion there might be available this year (likely not much) but I do have it.
It came from Dave Matthews, so I can only be as reliable as Dave on its provenance.

I also have Tupstones (from MAN), but don't have Hagloe Crab.

We are assembling an eclectic mix of varieties in our orchard to complement the easily found commercial varieties that are more widely grown (dabinet, yarly, harry masters, etc etc) so you may be interested in other things we have.
Are you anywhere near the Welsh Border/Herefordshire?

One thing I am after is the true Ten Commandments (NOT Reinette Rouge Etoilee, which is quite widely found in orchards and often mistaken for ten commandments)

Thanks Tom!
I wrote back direct.
Just been reading the Welsh Marches Pomona from MAN - really interesting reading more about the Ten Commandments confusions.
