Hello everyone,

We are a small cider producer called Pom Cider.

We have had an order from a buyer in Norway and I am trying (and failing) to get my head around how we get set up for exporting. I think we need to enrol on a system called EMCS, but I'm finding the government web pages quite confusing and can't work out how we do this.

Does anyone have any experience exporting or getting set up on EMCS? All advice and wisdom welcomed!

Hi Becky,

Not all of my advice or understanding will apply to you as I'm assuming you aren't yet a duty paying producer. If all you've done is apply for HMRC for the exemption notice you may not have key registrations yet such as an EORI number, excise warehouse registration, although you may have an ERN?

I think you definitely need to get an eori to export.

But as your Cider isn't duty paid, I'm not sure you definitely need to register for emcs.

Emcs is a service you access through your government gateway business tax account. Once you have a login for that you can request additional services on the account such as EMCS.

My advice would be for your buyer to let you know which shipping firm they intend to use to transport your cider. You should then speak to the firm and explain your duty exemption and ask them to confirm if you need further documents beyond the invoice and packing list. The freight forwarder should be completing their own EX-1/T-1 form that is the export declaration.

The complication is presumably that your cider will be dutyable once it arrives in Norway. So you may need to go through all the processes to get a duty suspended warehouse and emcs registration anyway.

Hope this little bit of advice is helpful and not just what you've already read!

Good luck,
Albert

I hate to say this but unless you are confident this or other buyers will create an ongoing relationship it may just be not worth it.

Trying to get sense out of the various authorities if you requiring something slightly out of the ordinary is painful the extreme. The advisors seem to only have access to the same incomprehensible directives as you, they are mostly very pleasant but often unable to help.

I was being chased by a very officious VAT official who finished on my side after watching me struggle vainly with Customs and Excise to try to reclaim VAT on European imports.

Getting an EORI is the easy bit!

Simply basing this on buying a few items from abroad I would agree
As above what quantities are we talking what sort of long term deals, have you fully exploited your UK market, will all determine how worthwhile this is.
Relatively moderate quantities might be able to be dealt with by a shipping agent, but I would agree with Charlotte, that unless you are going to create a decent ongoing market abroad it probably isn't worth the hassle.

I know that cideries in Norway often send samples to European cider competitions by first driving them to Sweden.
I know this won’t help you accomplish what you want to accomplish, but perhaps it will help you come to the conclusion that it’s not necessarily a worthwhile windmill to tilt at.

Me? My windmills are definitely worth tilting at.

Perhaps the best thing to do is find another importer who will consolidate a pallet and deal with all the paperwork. I once was talking to someone about this

I did a quick search in my e-mail.  Check out these people
