Anyone have an opinion on using a sink disposal unit (garburator) for macerating apples?

Hi,

For small batches, it seems to work fine. I'm doing no more than 3 bushels at a time, and have not had overheat issues, but am limited to apples that will fit through the grinder mouth. There is a tendency for these cut chunks to bind up, so I have a hardwood stick that I use while the motor is running to keep the feed going. Crabs smaller than about 1-1/2 inch can be simply dumped in run like a charm. Pomace is has the consistency of applesauce. My overall yield is greater than 75% easily, and often over 80% if I take my time.

(There are some pics below that are more than is probably appropriate for the full forum website.)

I built one according to the Whizbangcider.net plans several years ago. Two people washing chopping and grinding will fill a five gallon bucket faster than I can press. I use OESCO cloths and I have had no problems with the grind consistency. The Whizbang uses a separate motor and there has been no overheating. I had a used disposal unit and a motor with a coupling already so I can’t comment on expense. I did purchase a restaurant style French fry chopper with a quartering blade that is on a mount that sits atop five gallon buckets. This speeds the pre-chopping of larger apples considerably. Avoid garbage disposal units that are not entirely stainless steel and or chop extra fine. Some do come apart and you can tweak the size of the grind openings.
