I am a small producer of cider, perhaps 1000 litres per year max.
I have for several years been registered as a small producer with HMRC.
I have been confused about the changes which came in in Feb 25.
As I produce under 5Hl I still need to register but dont have to report monthly sales.
As i earn less than £1000 per annum I don't need to register for Self assessment but it seems i need to be registered for Self assessment in order to have a UTC which would allow me to register for duty. My PAYE UTC code doest seem to allow me to register on the duty scheme.
Am i going to have to register for self assessment?
Has anyone got some advice /. experience?

When you say you earn less than £1000, do you mean a profit of under £1000 or you total sales are under £1000?

Total sales less than £1000, much is given away. This year's production is pretty good I hope so I might be exceeding £1000.

If you think you will sell more that £1000 you would have to be registered as self employed anyway so it might be worth registering so you can get your UTC number

I wouldn't if  you don't have to and not wishing to advise you to commit any sort of tax fraud I wouldn't bother if you are ordinarily going to be under the limit. SA is and administrative burden that will never leave you. That said  you could also claim your expenses which may have some tax benefits, providing you can show solvency within the business and you do have the option to just opt for claiming the £1000 turnover exemption if that is more beneficial.

If you are registered as a sub 5Hl producer and now have your APPA registration number then you do not need to register onto the duty system, you will already be registered as exempt.
