We paid £120 a tonne for Somerset old orchard cider apples delivered in
dumpy bags. 2.25 tonnes in total.

Wow.  Going rate is $840-$1000 a ton for bittersweets here.

(One grower commands an extreme of $1500/ton, but sells mostly to hobbiests).

Seen as low as £95/tonne, no min order lvl. Others have been £100/tonne, £120/tonne, £130/tonne and higher depending on variety.

Price should be through the floor, lots of the orchards on contract have been giving apples away. Covid and the pub closures have hit the likes of Magners, Bulmers etc and they are paying the growers to leave them on the floor. Catch is you would probably have to pick yourselves, we collected over 3 tonnes last month, from Gloucestershire

I think the £100 is surprising inexpensive. I pay around 500$ CAD/ton (for decent quality but not all cider apples) which is around 3 times more expensive.

I guess apples in the UK are just super cheap?

Yes it does seem a bit like that, with my grower you can have any amount but I have seen cider apples at £100 pounds a ton , not seem them yet.

I was actually going to post on this myself. I was surprised that almost all the small sellers round here, were looking for substantially more this year (up to double) than they wanted last year. Against a backdrop of numerous reports of gluts rotting on the ground, I was pretty surprised. In the end, I paid just under £200 per ton. Last year, I averaged about £125. I generally don't negotiate, but rather shop around. Had I used the same orchard as last year, I would have paid £250 per ton. I have suspected that growers were charging more to try regain some of what was lost in volume, but this is just a best guess.

Eastern Europe has same prices as UK around £120 per ton but growers tend higher now like £140. But in UK you get propper cider apples. In EE you get them for juice or distillation.

In Asturias and depending on whether it is a DOP or not around 0.30/ kg

If you are prepared to pick up the apples yourself it is possible to get them for free from old farm orchards in North Devon.  The hazards are pigs, sheep, too long grass and nettles! However there are often interesting varieties of apples to identify.

For clarity, is everyone referring to a metric ton, i.e., 1000 kilograms, or 2,250 pounds?

Metric for my £120/tonne.

I would be talking about 1,000Kg = 1tonne = 2204 lbs (uk), under 20kg difference to a uk ton = 2240lbs (uk)

So that would be between £95 and £130 per Tonne (1000kg) quoted this year.

So it seems you Brits yet have a different ton... I had thought you were on the metric ton.
Hence we have 3 different values for a ton (or tonne)
From Wikipedia...

In the United Kingdom, the (Imperial) ton is Statute measure, defined as 2,240 lb (1,016 kg).[a][2] From 1965, the UK embarked upon a program of metrication and gradually introduced metric units, including the tonne (metric ton), defined as 1000 kg (about 2,204.62 lb). The UK Weights and Measures Act 1985 explicitly excluded many units and terms from "use for trade", including the ton (and the term "metric ton" for "tonne").[3]

In the United States and Canada,[4] a ton is defined to be 2,000 pounds (907.18474 kg).

Where confusion is possible, the 2240 lb ton is called "long ton" and the 2000 lb ton "short ton"; the tonne is distinguished by its spelling, but usually pronounced the same as ton, hence the US term "metric ton". In the UK the final "e" of "tonne" can also be pronounced (/ˈtʌni/),[5] or "metric ton" when it is necessary to make the distinction.

Yes we have 2, the metric one @ 1000kg the “tonne”, and the original one @ 2240lbs but there is not much difference between them.
