Arrrrgggghhhhhh! Registering With Google, Part 2

O.K., so I took the advice of some users in this group and decided to call Google and get the little PIN they make you get before calling.  Well, they were no help.  I guess my Apps for Education request was denied, but I never got notice of it since the message was sent to the new domain I created for Google Apps and the stupid system won't let me in to check the Gmail account for the administrator because it keeps telling me that my Apps for Education has expired and it just loops around.  And even though I have enabled Gmail for all users as soon as I tried to get out of the Apps for Education loop it has now booted me over to Apps for Business with no other choices, and I still can't get into Gmail for the administrator I created in the new domain.

It looks like no public libraries are going to be allowed to register for Apps for Education from this point forward.  Since I have no intention of using this domain for employee email or other functions, I guess it will cost me $5 per month/ $60 year for just the one user who is the administrator.  And then $50 per license for Chrome hardware rather than $30.  Is there anything else I am missing before I dive into this?  I have been waiting three months for this to get worked out and our public access computers are dropping like flies so I need to start our Chrome workstation trial very soon.

has anyone tried Apps for Government?  is that an option?

That sounds really frustrating. Things were a lot easier when I first signed up. I'm going to check in with the Google rep who originally helped me, and the reseller I worked with to add chromebooks last year, and see if I can get some clarity. I encourage others to do the same. We really need a simple, straightforward process for libraries!

The guy I talked to said that other libraries that have signed up for Education were really "approved" as Non-Profit.  He asked if we were 501c3 and I said we weren't but my foundation was.  I didn't feel right trying to get signed up under the foundation, so I just let it go.  I did e-mail a company called Onix www.onixnet.com who does Apps for Government for those who will have less than 50 email addresses.  I saw that there are a number of library systems and state libraries that have gone the Government route, so this may work fine.  It's just not "free" and we always try to get free when we can, of course.

Still $30 per management console license with the government version? I had the idea, perhaps mistakenly, that only education got the $30 rate.

Ok, well to continue this saga, I gave in and signed up for Apps for Work, which is the same as Business I guess they are changing the name or something.  Then I paid the $50 annual fee like others in this Group have done.  I was just too tired of talking to people on the phone and having them email me as if I wasn't already hip deep in the process.

And then I find out that hardware licenses are not just $50 for business like they were back in June but $135.00 per device.  Since I am just going to use my own reseller and not one of their suggested resellers, I am tempted to just choose the "academic" license and see if it will fly.  But I am just too darn honest, phooey phooey phooey.

It is all a confusing mess, with Google saying different things and then all of their reseller partners doing different things.  Promevo, who is supposed to be the "education" partner has Chromebases for $348 and licenses for $150.  I just put in a quote request with CDW-G for $317 and $135 respectively.  Either way I have to look at it as getting a plug -n-play reliable public access workstation for $452.  I did get some info from a library in Kansas to help me through the kisok mode set up, so we are just going to dive in.  I'll make a new thread and post about what apps people have added to their devices for use by the public (besides the Google ones of course).

Thank you everyone for your help!  It's kind of crappy that I have to pay more, but I am not willing to keep waiting and hoping for a different answer from Google.  I want to get these machines out there and start our trial.  This will be a big step for us, moving away from workstation management software (Userful, ugh) and letting go of patron authentication with our ILS.  But overall I think it will be better for staff and better for patrons.

I don't know if this will help or not, but I just got my renewal invoice from Cumulus (our reseller of the Google Apps which gives us our library domain for library administration of our chromebooks) and our line item is for "Google Apps Premier Edition" for $60/year

Has anyone found out more information on the licensing for Libraries? We were getting them for $30 through Promevo and now they want to charge us $150. I am not sure why they are changing the fees for Libraries…maybe now that more Libraries are buying Chromebooks. Our Friend group has a 501c3 but we were setup under our own…I believe. Is there anyone we could talk to about this?
