Hi All,

Has anyone developed a MOR grammar for standard African-American English dialect?

Thanks so much,
Kimberly

Dear Kimberly,

Many of the features of AAVE that diverge from Standard American English involve alternative syntactic and phonological processes that would fall outside of the scope of morphological analysis.  There are a few remaining morphological features such as a-gonna, but at least some of these are already recognized by ENG-MOR.  In addition, there are probably various lexical items used by AAVE speakers that are not yet in ENG-MOR but which could easily be added.

If there are important things that ENG-MOR is not recognizing in an AAVE transcript, please tell me and we will try to add them.

It seems like the null 3sg -s and habitual (invariant) ‘be’ are syntactic but also morphological in nature. I would bet that the folks who developed the DELV test could make additional suggestions.

Misha,

True enough, but a morphological tagger  line ENG-MOR just looks at words and if it sees "he run" it just tags "run" as the base form and if it sees "I be"  it just tags "be" as the base form too.  So, there will be some morphological categories and affixes missing, but no changes need to be made to the ENG-MOR tagger for this operation.  Instead, these patterns would have to be picked up in a parser with some grammar checking routines.  At that point, instead of calling these grammatical violations, they could be tagged as dialectal variations.
