Good morning,

I am trying to access the English Test Results file under the Test Results Collection. After downloading the file (using a Mac), I receive an error message when I try to open it. There is a prompt for "grant access" followed by the message "Excel cannot open the file 'english-results-data.xlsx' because the file format or file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file."

Any suggestions for next steps?

Thank you,
Cathy

Click "yes" to open regardless. It is simply in another, older Excel version. On a Mac, I have to go into my Downloads folder, double click file, say "yes" to open regardless, and then it's fine.

Thank you, Brie. I opened it with an older version of Excel and I'm in!

Dear Brie and Cathy,

Just so other people might understand what this is about, the relevant file comes from the homepage at aphasia.talkbank.org.  It is true that different versions of Excel behave differently.  I am using Excel 16.45 on Mac under Big Sur and that file opens directly for me with no warnings.  So, I don’t know whether there is any issue about old vs. new versions of the Excel program, or Mac vs. Windows, or different versions of the Excel file format.  As far as I can see, the version of the file on the web is pretty generally compatible with most versions of Excel. If other people are having trouble opening Excel files, perhaps we could try to figure out exactly which versions fail when.
