Dear Brian,

There appears to be a problem with sonic mode. Sonic mode opens, but it does not show sound waves (see attached image). The video does not play either as long as sonic mode is open. We tried to delete the .wav file and generate a new one, but that did not help.
Do you have a solution?

Thank you.

Kind regards,
Julia

Julia,

It is possible that CLAN converter from video file .m4v to wave file .wav does not recognize the video format or the video file is read protected. First try getting new CLAN fro our server. Your CLAN is from 13 January 2015.

If updating CLAN does not fix the problem, then try opening "Dansekjole_Dag_3.m4v" video file with QuickTime player and see if it can play it. Also, open wave file "Dansekjole_Dag_3-clanw.wav", that CLAN created, with QuickTime player and see if it can play wave file or if wave file is empty. if QuickTime player can't play it, then CLAN can not play it either.

But, even if QuickTime player can play both media files, CLAN might still not be able to convert .m4v video file to .wav wave file correctly. It would be most helpful if you could upload your video file "Dansekjole_Dag_3.m4v" and CHAT file to our server for testing on our end. You can upload your example files by following instructions on web page http://talkbank.org/share/contrib.html. When uploading sample media files to us you can ignore steps 1, 2 and 5.

Leonid.

Dear Leonid,

I'm not the one with that problem. It's my student and she tried to contact you, but that did not seem to work. Here is her answer. Sonic mode still doesn't work:

“Hi.

Julia Ruser has been in contact with you on my behalf concerning some problems with sonic mode. It is not possible for me to see the sound waves.

I have tried everything you suggested without any luck.

You asked me to upload the files to your site, so you can test it on your end.. Not even that is possible - I just get an error with the video-file. I have tried twice.

Is it possible that the problem occur because of the m4v-format? - I haven't had any problems with MOV- or MP4 - do you think it would help, if I had luck converting the file to one of those formats instead?

Thank you.

Kind regards,

Mie

And another e-mail from my student:

Hi!

I am not able to get through on the forum as far as I can see..

I have tried converting the file to something else, without any luck.

Will you please let them know that nothing really works?

-Now Clan crashes too.. Perhaps it’s because of windows 10, but I don’t have any problems with the older files I have been working on. – I can open them and they still work fine.

-Mie

I hope you can help.

Best,
Julia

Julia and Mie,

Windows 10 has problems with QuickTime. You can download the latest version of QuickTime 7.7.6 that still works on Windows 10 from this Apple's web site: https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1822?locale=en_US

First make sure that you have the latest version of QuickTime installed on your computer and try CLAN or QuickTime player again. The fact that my suggestions of opening your m4v file with QuickTime player have failed and that you have no problems with MOV or MP4 files tells me that m4v file is either corrupted or in format that QuickTime doesn't recognize. You can also try opening m4v file with "Windows Media Player". if "Windows Media Player" can't open m4v file, then it is most likely corrupted. If "Windows Media Player" can open it, but QuickTime player can't, then QuickTime doesn't recognize the m4v file. if the file is not corrupted, then try to convert it to either MOV or MP4 format. if that fails, then the best solution is for you to upload the m4v file to our server for testing.

Leonid and Brian,

I asked Mie to upload the file, but the upload link (http://gandalf.talkbank.org/contribute) did not work:

I am still not able to upload anything to the site – I don’t get any error message this time – but nothing happens when I press the ‘start upload’ button – I have tried reloading and everything.

Mie cut the video to make it smaller and:

I was able to make a 20-minute cut of the video file, which I was going to upload to the site – but THAT cut actually works in sonic mode – CLAN still crashed right afterwards, but it worked.. I have no idea why, since it’s the same format as the original one, which still doesn’t work..
