Hi all, let me start of by saying that I am a fairly new user of CLAN, so bear with me.

We're doing an analysis of where hesitation phenomena are produced in a set of transcripts. We hope to use COMBO to look at the context of the hesitations in the utterance, but have a few questions about its use.

1) Is it possible to use COMBO (or another command) to tell us the most frequent context of a particular search item? For example, could I use CLAN to tell me what the most common productions would be before and after a filled pause (coded &um, etc. in our data)?

2) Can we use the COMBO command to analyze both the main speech tier and the morphological tier of the CHAT file at once? We would like to run searches using a combination of search terms from different tiers. For example, looking for any verb (coded on the %mor tier) appearing before a filled pause (which we have coded on the main tier).

Thank you for the help!

Ian,

You fist question can be answered with command:
combo +s_*^&um^_* filename.cha

The second question doesn't have an answer yet, but I have gotten an approval to implement this feature and it should be working by the end of the week. I will let you know when it is done and the exact command you can use.

Leonid.

Ian,

The second feature turned out to be more complicated to implement than I originally thought. I am still working on it and I will let you know when it is working.

Ian,

I finally finished COMBO changes. please get new CLAN from the web. Here is a list of few commands that you can try.

1. combo combo.cha +d7 +s_*^&um^_* +o%gra
2. combo combo.cha +d7 +s_*^&um^_*
3. combo combo.cha +d7 +sm|v^&um^_*
4. combo combo.cha +d7 +sm|aux^&um^_*
5. combo combo.cha +d7 +sg|SUBJ^&um^_*
6. combo combo.cha +d7 +s_*^&um^_* +t%gra

The "m|v" or "m|aux" mean to look for words that are verbs or aux and the search string says to find all occurrences where filler "&um" follows those words.

The "g|SUBJ" means to look for words that are Subjects as identified on %gra tier. Again the search string says find all occurrences where filler "&um" follows "Subjects".

Command lines 1 through 4 will search %mor tier. Command lines 5 and 6 will search %gra tier.

If anyone think this feature could use more refinement or expansion, then please let us know.

Leonid.
