Dear all,

I'm terribly sorry to ask what might be totally obvious to everyone, except a newbie like me. When transcribing in CLAN, e.g. in Coder mode, is there a way to visualize the running transcription in a way that the syntax is checked as I type? I'm thinking of something like e.g. TextWrangler, which shows text in different colors according to the syntax of the programming language being used, and alerts the user of gross syntax errors (typo in the participant three-letter code, colon missing, space instead of tab, no period at the end of the line...). Does this exist in CLAN or elsewhere?

Thank you in advance,

-Alex

hi Alex,

The CHECK command in CLAN does what you are describing, but not as you type.  I am not aware of any aspect of CLAN that involves different text colors to note errors, except in the output for CHECK, where errors show up in red.

Alex,

CLAN does not do error checking as you type. You can however press ESC-L keys or chose menu "Mode->Check opened file" to run CHECK on opened file at any time you want to. If you worry about mistyping participant's code, then you can use corresponding menu under Tiers to insert correct code. For that your file must already have a @Participants header tier specified.
